One of the more common complaints about the 'liners is that they were designed for people with long arms. Due to the internal wiring and the size (1.25") of the handlebars, the easiest way to get more pullback is to change the risers. Several companies produce risers for the 'liners, and construction differs greatly.
Aeromach's and Thunder's solution re-uses the OEM handlebar clamps. Baron's and Rivco's solution provide an entirely new clamp.

Installing The BACK OFF Brake Light Modulator On A Yamaha ‘Liner

In the early ‘90’s I was stopped at a traffic light when I heard a set of screeching tires approaching. My mirror showed a young girl stopped about five feet in back of me.

I guess she saw the red light but not me! It was daylight and a clear day and no heavy traffic. She just didn’t see me!

A bit of research found the Signal Dynamics Corporation who produced the BACK OFF module that flashed the brake lights in a “Three Short – One Long” pattern, as long as the brakes were held on.

That install consisted of cutting the brake light wire and splicing in the two wires from the module. It worked great and only took a few minutes to install. All the cables were easily gotten to on my 1100 Virago. I later transferred the module to my Road Star.

Check out the attached pictures which show the taillight connector which is just under the ECU and held within a protective pouch. The two wires needed are the BLACK wire (ground) and the YELLOW wire (brakelight). The connector is the only one with a yellow wire in it. Carefully separate the connectors and follow the cable back to where it is directed back to the rear fender. I slit the cable cover so as to expose a bit more wire.

Visit their web site at signaldynamics.com and take a look at their products, one of which is the BACK OFF unit. A STRONG caution here : The Liner line uses true LED taillight assembly, which draws VERY little current and causes problems with the old BACK OFF modules.. You MUST purchase the “XP Signal Module” for use with LED lights.

The “XP” is a three wire unit (a ground wire connection has been added) that connects in series with your brake light wire. The unit comes with additional features, one being for auto back up lights, which I taped back.

The red wire connects to the +12 volts from the brake switches. The black wire connects to a ground.

If you want the light to flash 3 short and one long, which is repeated – connect the white wire with red stripe to the taillight. That’s it!

If you want 5 short flashes and then continuous on, connect the red wire with white stripe to the taillight.

I chose the first option of 3 short (mine does 4 short!) and one long - repeated.

I cut the yellow wire about 3” back from the connector and to these wires I crimped on Automobile “Barrel” connectors which are available at most auto stores.

I “Skinned” back the black wire (ground) inside the cable , and soldered an 8” length of black wire to it, then crimped another connector to the loose end and taped the connection.

The BACK OFF wires were a bit short, so I spliced 6” of wire to the red, black, and white/W-red stripe and installed a barrel connector to each.

I now had the ability to remove the module by unplugging the barrel connectors and re-connect the two yellow wires , which restores the bike to normal operation.

I carefully removed the ridge on the plastic bracket in back of the ECU area. This gives a level surface to stick the module in place.

The pictures show the layout of all components.

It’s easy and adds a LOT to your safety my friends…
Another issue I believe worthy of mention is the factory recall regarding the throttle cable bracket on the upper left frame neck applicable to 2006 models only. Evidently the cable(s) could bind or jam under certain conditions, the fix is a slightly longer cable guide bracket the dealer installs, a very easy fix, under 5 minutes but it IS important.

Anyone who buys a 2nd hand 2006 (or new I suppose, believe there are still a few kicking around) should check with a dealer if this recall has been addressed on their machine. The dealer simply has to punch in the VIN to the Yamaha database to confirm.

Primary Drive Pulley
Serious warning for everybody - Check the PRIMARY DRIVE PULLEY NUT, it can come loose - as in finger tight.... It can be spun off with fingers, no wrench needed, this is NOT a good thing!

This is a nut that's supposed to be torqued to 100 ft lbs and staked in place. I hate to think what would happen if it got loose. It's under a cover that's easy to get open to check this, and there's no oil in it - I suggest everyone take a good look at this ASAP.

Its behind the round chrome cover on the left side of the motor just behind the floor board. It has slotted vents, its the front pulley on your drive belt.
One note - if you have passenger floorboards, it may need to be removed (or at least one bolt removed to rotate them) to provide adequate space to get the cover off of the primary drive. There isn't much involved in checking it. Six bolts hold the cover on, 4 short and two long (on the bottom). Let the cover hinge down so the wires aren't damaged. The part that is behind the outer cover is the rectifier / voltage regulator (changes AC current to DC and regulates the voltage). According to the service manual the pulley nut is a one time use part as it has the word "new" next to it. I think Yamaha's intent is that if this nut is removed a new one is to be installed in it's place. It takes a 30 mm socket for the pulley nut. Some folks use blue Locktite, torque it to 100 ft lbs then stake the nut. The whole thing takes 15-20 minutes at the most. To "Stake" the nut - There is a groove in the shaft that the nut goes on. The nut itself has a sort of lip on the outer side. You can take a hammer and screw driver and make an indentation in the outer part of the nut to keep it from backing off after tightening it. That part of the nut seemed rather soft so it didn't take much of a tap on the screw driver with the hammer to "stake" it. It may call for a chisel to stake it. I am not sure. I had a screwdriver handy and it worked for the job with just a medium tap to bend the outer side of the nut into the groove of the pulley shaft.

Serious warning for everybody - Check the PRIMARY DRIVE PULLEY NUT, it can come loose - as in finger tight.... It can be spun off with fingers, no wrench needed.

This is a nut that's supposed to be torqued to 100 ft lbs and staked in place. I hate to think what would happen if it got loose. It's under a cover that's easy to get open to check this and there's no oil in it - I suggest everyone take a good look at this ASAP.

Its behind the round chrome cover on the left side of the motor just behind the floor board.

It has slotted vents, its the front pulley on your drive belt.

There isn't much involved in checking it. Six bolts hold the cover on, 4 short and two long (on the bottom). Let the cover hinge down so the wires aren't damaged. I forget what is located in the outer cover but those bolts do not have to come out. It takes a 30 mm socket for the pulley nut. Mine had loosened up since last summer. I used blue Locktite, torqued it to 100 ft lbs then staked the nut. The whole thing takes 15-20 minutes at the most.

To "Stake" the nut - There is a groove in the shaft that the nut goes on. The nut itself has a sort of lip on the outer side. I took a hammer and screw driver and made an indentation in the outer part of the nut to keep it from backing off after tightening it.

There are several vendors who manufacture exhaust systems for the 'liners.

The 'liner comes with a 2-into-1 (the front and rear cylinder exhaust pipes merge into a single exit pipe) exhaust system with EXUP. According to Patrick Racing, their aftermarket air intake makes the most power with the OEM pipe.
NOTES: Several of the above exhausts differ between the Roadliner and Stratoliner. For example, Hard Krome makes 2 versions of the 3" Big Straight, one for the Roadliner (shorter), and one for the Stratoliner (longer).

Using a slip-on exhaust allows you to retain the EXUP valve and are fairly simple to install. The full replacement systems require complete removal of the OEM exhaust. Generally you will need new exhaust gaskets as well.

Disclaimer: Check with your local munincipality regarding the legality of the above exhaust systems. All of the full replacement systems remove your catalytic converter.
